This term has been used in several different ways.

these cells are specialized neurons (interneurons) in the neocortex first described by Ramon y Cajal (Ramon y Cajal, 1911) and named after their distinct axonal arborizations on and around somata of target neurons (Somogyi et al, 1983; Jones and Hendry, 1984; Casteyon et al, 2001). Three distinct types of neocortical basket cells have been described: large basket cells, small basket cells, and nest basket cells. Nest basket cells form simpler dendritic arbors and an axonal plexus of intermediate density, composed of a few long, smooth axonal branches.
These three cell types differ in morphology and immunoreactivities for different calcium binding proteins and neuropeptides. Small basket cells have been shown to lack NPY expression but invariably express VIP. Large basket cells do not express VIP, calretinin or somatostatin. Nest basket cells do not express VIP and calretinin (Wang et al, 2002). Differences are seen also in the electrophysiologic behavior of these cells and the connections they make. The functional significance or the organizational principles underlying this diversity are not known.

These cells are contractile myoepithelial cells (smooth muscle cells) characterized by a dendritic basket-like structure in the periphery of acini and ducts of serous glands (Caselitz et al, 1986; Mir-Salim et al, 1998; Soloff et al, 1980; Warburton et al, 1982; Watanabe, 1980; Zedda and Farina,1998).

These cells, called also shadow cells of Gumprecht or Gumprecht's shadow cells, are seen in blood films from patients with lymphoproliferative syndromes and particularly in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). A statistically significant correlation between the numbers of basket cells and lymphoctres with dense chromatin, and the anatomic-clinical stage of the disease does not exist. These cells are considered spreading artefacts, which are produced during the preparation of blood film slide (Binet et al, 1993).
