[beclin homolog-1] This Caenorhabditis elegans gene encodes an ortholog of the mammalian autophagy gene Beclin-1. Overexpression of bec-1 in yeast mutants can rescue the autophagy defects. Ruck et al (2011) have implicated bec-1 in retrograde transport from endosomes to the Golgi and have demonstrated a requirement for bec-1 in the clearance of apoptotic cell corpses.
bec-1 activity is required for the survival of dauer larvae and for adult life span extension (Meléndez et al, 2003). Silencing of bec-1 expression suggests a role for bec-1 in normal growth rates, movement, and vulval morphogenesis.
