These cells are sometimes being referred to also as flask cells or Ruffini's flask cells (Landström and Lovtrup, 1975).
Bottle cells are found in the epithelial layer of the gastrula at the dorsal vegetal/marginal boundary of Xenopus laevis embryos. These cells are derived from cells in the dorsal marginal zone that undergo apical constriction while simultaneously lengthening along the apicobasal axis, transforming from cuboidal to flask-shaped. Bottle cells are identified readily by the accumulation of pigment granules at their apices. Their appearance marks the onset of blastopore formation.
