This toad tachykinin, (KPRPDQFYGLMamide), has been isolated from the intestine of the cane toad, Bufo marinus (Conlon et al, 1998). The peptide is related to Substance P and belongs to the family of tachykinins. It acts via tachykinin NK1-like receptors and causes the contraction of the intestine of the cane toad, Bufo marinus. Bufokinin shows relatively high affinity but lack of selectivity for all three tachykinin binding sites (NK1 receptors, NK2 receptors, NK3 receptors) in rat tissues.
Bufokinin produces a long-lasting contraction of the small intestine in its natural species
