This general collective term has been used to refer to a number of known factors released by apoptotic cells or exposed on their cells surface that possess a direct immunosuppressive effect and contribute to immunomodulation by influencing the bioactivities of immune cells, for example, macrophages and dendritic cells. Such factors include TGF-beta, IL10, AMP and/or ADP, thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1), and others.
