[cardiac Purkinje cell]
Also called: Purkinje fibers. These cells are special muscle fibers of the heart. They are impulse-conducting cells that differentiate from myocytes during embryogenesis. Purkinje fibers are located in the bundle of His, in the deepest layer of the endocardium. These modified cardiac muscle cells conduct impulses five times more rapidly than surrounding cells. By cooperating with the sinoatrial node and the atrioventricular node, they form a central part of the cardiac conduction system that initiates and maintains a rhythmic heartbeat (James, 2002, 2003; Mikawa et al, 2003; Pennisi et al, 2002).
