This term has been used as a general term for proteins secreted from the heart (Doroudgar and Glembotski, 2011). The term cardiomyokine may be used specifically to refer to factors secreted by cardiomyocytes, the contractile cells of the heart (see also: myokines). Cardiokines are of importance for cellular processes such as excitation-contraction coupling, hypertrophic growth, myocardial remodeling, stress responses, and stem cell functions. As secreted factors, they may influence such processes in an autocrine, paracrine, or juxtacrine manner.
