The carotid body is a neural crest-derived organ located at the bifurcation of the common carotid arteries. This organ contains several cell types, including endothelial cells, sustentacular cells, glomus cells (called also type 1 carotid body cells; abbr. CB glomus cells), and terminals of afferent and sympathetic nerves (Biscoe, 1971; Eyzaguirre and Fidone, 1980). So-called type 2 carotid body cells (carotid body sustentacular cells) resemble glial cells (Kameda, 1996; Hansen, 1981; McDonald DM and Mitchell, 1975; Nurse and Fearon, 2002) and correspond to the sustentacular cells of the carotid body.
