This anmtimicrobial peptides (63 amino acids) has been isolated from the Harderian gland (orbital gland found in many terrestrial vertebrates that possess a nictitating membrane) of the bullfrog, Rana catesbeiana. Catesbeianalectin and its putative unprocessed precursor, catesbeianalectin-GK show slight but significant growth inhibitory activity against the Gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli. Both peptides exhibit mast cell degranulation activity without cytotoxic effects and are thought to be involved in innate immun defense of the eye (Konishi et al, 2013).
