abbr. CRS. This short sequence motif (six to seven clustered basic amino acid residues) is found in many secreted proteins, including growth factors, cytokines and other biologically important molecules that are retained on the cell surface after their secretion (Lokeshwar et al, 1990; Östman et al, 1991; LaRochelle et al, 1991; Boensch et al, 1999; Heldin and Westermark, 1999). Retention probably functions to create a reservoir for these factors and permits the orchestrated and regulated release of factors during cell growth, differentiation, and organogenesis.
