This term has been coined by Tichy et al (2013) and refers to a cell death pathway observed in mouse embryonic stem cells in response to treatment with etoposide that appears to be independent of caspase activation, is different from necroptosis, does not involve autophagy mechanisms but is partially dependent on the activity of lysosomal proteases (cathepsin B, cathepsin L, cathepsin H, and cathepsin D). Inhibition of p53 either as a transcription factor by pifithrin-alpha or in its mitochondrial role by pifithrin-micro significantly reduced cell death levels, and EndoG has beenidentified as a protease participating in the DNA
