This cell type is one of two major cell types in the lamellar epithelium of fish gills (see also: pavement cells) (Wilson and Laurent, 2002). Chloride cells are now usually being referred to as mitochondrion-rich cells (abbr. often: MR cells) (Pisam and Ramboug, 1992).
Chloride cells are osmoregulatory cells that are the sites of trans-epithelial Ca2+ and Cl- uptake from water and thus play a major role in salinity adaptation (Foskett and Scheffey, 1982; Hirose et al, 2003; Perry, 1997; Evans et al, 2005; Larsen et al, 1996; Hwang and Lee, 2007; Evans, 2008).
