[chondrocyte-derived osteoprogenitor cell, chondrocyte-derived osteoprogenitor, chondrocyte-derived osteoprogenitors]
abbr. CDOPs. These cells (Park J et al, 2015) are derived from terminally differentiated hypertrophic chondrocytes that survive beyond terminal differentiation and can undergo an alternative pathway of development as a mitotically active new cell type. They do not die by apoptosis or other forms of cell death but give rise to osteoblasts participating in endochondral bone formation by a process of transdifferentiation (see also: Yang et al, 2014; Zhou et al, 2014).
