[chromophil cell]
a histological term referring to cells that stain easily with the usual histological dyes (e. g., eosin and hematoxylin). Depending upon the dye used, chromophil cells are either acidophilic cells or basophilic cells (in contrast to chromophobe cells that have little or no affinity for these stains). The term chomophil us usually synonymous with chromaffin. For particular cell type see also: chromaffin cells, APUD cells.
