Also: autophagic astroglial death. This term pertains to changes observed in irreversibly injured astrocytes in white matter. Clasmatodendrosis is an irreversible astroglial degenerative change, which includes extensive cytoplasmic swelling. vacuolization of cell bodies, and disintegration or beading of dendrites.

The process has been observed in astrocytes following ischemia (Kraig and Chesler (1990) and can be triggered in brain slices by acidosis coupled to mitochondrial inhibition (Friede and van Houten, 1961; Kraig and Chesler, 1990) and hypoxic-ischemic damage (Gelot et al, 2009). Hulse et al (2001) have established an organ culture model to study the process.
