These cells are pigmented round cells found in the iris. Normally, they are located in the iris stroma and are usually not found outside the iris. These cells are known also as clump cells of Koganei (Koganei, 1885) and are thought to represent histiocytes, i.e. they are modified tissue macrophages (Wobmann and Fine, 1972).
It has been shown that these cells express macrophage markers and migrate out of the iris and can cover and penetrate the retina in knock-out mice lacking expression of collagen type 18 (Marneros and Olsen, 2003).
