These cells surround the outside of the base of colonic crypts and represent a kind of myofibroblasts, showing features of fibroblasts and smooth muscle cells (Richman et al, 1987). These cells play a role in controlling crypt stem cell behaviour, cell migration, and differentiation by producing, among other factors, antagonists of bone morphogenetic proteins such as gremlin-1, gremlin-2, and CHL [chordin-like], some of which are involved also as activators of members of the Wnt family (Kosinsky et al, 2007; Crosnier et al, 2006).
