contraction-band necrosis

this term refers to a phenomenon identified originally a short time after irreversible cardiomyocyte injury. It is considered a marker of cell death, characterised histologically by multiple irregular hypereosinophilic bands alternating with a lighter staining granular zone within an individual myocyte. This kind of necrosis has been associated with coronary occlusion, resuscitation attempts, catecholamine excess, intracranial haemorrhage, potassium or magnesium deficiency, electric shock, cobalt administration, and a wide variety of drugs and is being referred to in the scientific literature also as myofibrillar degeneration and coagulative myocytolysis (Karch and Billingham, 1986; Hopster et al, 1996 and references cited therein).
