Corifollitropin alfa is a recombinant protein containing the alpha subunit of FSH [Follicle-stimulating hormone], which is shared with other glycoprotein hormones (see: glycoprotein hormones alpha peptide) and a recombinant hormone-specific beta subunit comprising the coding sequences of the beta subunit of FSH fused to the C-terminal peptide of the beta-subunit of hCG [human chorionic gonadotropin], which bears four O-linked oligosaccharide binding sites (Fares et al, 1992). Corifollitropin alfa interacts only with the FSH receptor and lacks luteinizing hormone activity (LaPolt et al, 1992).
