These cells form the most superficial horny layer of the epidermis (stratum corneum) and are being referred to also as horny cells (Elias and Choi, 2005; Elias, 2005; Marks, 2004). Corneocytes are completely flattened cells without nucleus or cytoplasmic organelles. These biologically dead cells are derived from keratinocytes and constitute the final stage of keratinocyte differentiation (Candi et al, 2005). The process of forming this layer of dead cells is often being referred to as keratinization or cornified envelope formation. They are called also keratinized cells.
