cycle inhibiting factor

abbr. Cif (a term with multiple meanings). This factor has been identified by Marchès et al (2003) in enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) and enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC). The factor is encoded by a lambdoid prophage and is injected into the host cell by the bacterial type III secretion system. Cycle inhibiting factor blocks cell cycle G2/M transition and induces the formation of stress fibers through the recruitment of focal adhesions. A cycle inhibiting factor mutant causes localized effacement of microvilli and intimately attaches to the host cell surface, but is defective in the ability to block mitosis.
