[cyclomodulin]
This term has been proposed by Nougayrède et al (2005) for microbial factors that interfere with the eukaryotic cell cycle as a strategy of immune invasion (for other factors see also: Modulins).
Cytolethal distending toxins (see: CDT) and the cycle inhibiting factor are examples of inhibitory cyclomodulins that might facilitate immune evasion by inhibiting clonal expansion of lymphocytes. Cyclomodulins might also allow the entry of pathogenic bacteria into the body or prolong their local existence, for example by interfering with epithelial barrier integrity or shedding of epithelia.
