abbr. Cif (a term with multiple meanings). This protein rapidly induces the efflux of cytochrome C from purified human mitochondria (Harr et al, 1999). The activity of the protein is inhibited by BCL2. The protein requires activation and this can be achieved addition of caspase-3, caspase-7, or caspase-8 to cytosolic extracts of cells overexpressing BCL2.
Cif is identical with an agonist of cell death by apoptosis known as BID and Cif activity is neutralized selectively by antibodies against BID.
