The death domain superfamily (DD superfamily) comprises proteins containing a death domain, a death effector domain, a caspase recruitment domain (CARD), or a pyrin domain (see also: death domain fold). Members of individual subfamilies mediate homotypic interactions and mediate the assembly and activation of protein complexes involved in cell death by apoptosis and inflammation (Park et al, 2007).
