[death ligands]
This term refers to any protein that signals to a death receptor and, through receptor engagement rapidly triggers cell death by apoptosis by initiating a process whereby adaptor proteins are rec ruited to the receptor, which in turn recruit initiator caspases, and give rise to a pro-apoptotic complex termed the DISC (death-inducing signaling complex).
Major death ligands include TNF-alpha, TNF-beta, FAS ligand, APO-3 ligand and TRAIL.
