dependence receptors

[dependence receptor]

a general term for functionally related but structurally unrelated receptors that can mediate cell death by apoptosis when the ligand normally binding to them is absent or below a critical threshhold level. These receptors transduce a completely different signal in the presence of their ligands, and signaling may promote survival, differentiation or migration (Mehlen and Tibert, 2004; Porter and Dhakshinamoorthy, 2004; Bredesen et al, 2004; Mehlen and Bredesen, 2004; Goldschneider and Mehlen, 2010). This is in contrast to other receptors, called death receptors, which signal apoptosis upon ligand binding. Dependence receptors have been described in the context of axon guidance, receptors for trophic factors, and morphogens ... ... ... ... ... Subscribe to continue reading! ... ...
