abbr. DARC. This noninvasive real-time imaging technology allows detection of single retinal ganglion cells undergoing cell death by apoptosis. Loss of retinal ganglion cells plays a key role in glaucoma. The technique employs flurorescently labeled annexin-5 and confocal laser scanning ophthalmoscopy. The technique allows fast detection of changes occurring in retinal ganglion cell apoptosis over hours, days, and months in vivo (Cordeiro et al, 2004) as opposed to conventional long-term observations relying on the detection of visual field changes that are noticed only when a considerable fraction of retinal ganglion cells
