this general term pertains to the highly regulated process by which the extracellular portions of membrane proteins are released from the cells. This may include membrane forms of cytokines, growth factors, their receptors, some CD antigens. The enzymes responsible for the proteolytic cleavage of transmembrane proteins and the release of their extracellular domain are generally being referred to as sheddases. Ectodomain shedding reduces the cell surface expression of membrane proteins and at the same time creates soluble protein fragments with biological activity. This modulates processes such as growth factor signalling, cell adhesion, inflammation, and survival of normal cells and cancer cells
