[endonuclease G] aproved gene symbol: ENDOG. Endonuclease G is a mitochondrion-specific endonuclease that preferentially cleaves CG-rich DNA stretches (Tiranti et al, 1995). EndoG encodes a homolog of Caenorhabditis elegans CPS-6.
EndoG is activated specifically by stimuli eliciting cell death by apoptosis. The enzyme is released from mitochondria and translocates to the nucleus, causing the fragmentation of chromatin DNA.
