this collective term refers to any kind of mediator expressed by dying cells that functions as find-me signals or eat-me signals (for overview see also: Park and Kim, 2017). The coordinated expression of such signals, which are recognised by multiple receptors, is required for the fast and efficient removal, by professional phagocytes, of cell corpses left as a result, for example, after apoptosis and/or other forms of cell death, in order to avoid inflammation and/or expression of self-antigens that might trigger autoimmunity.
