[enteric glial cell]
This type of glial cells is found in the enteric nervous system (Gershon and Rothman, 1991). They resemble astrocytes of the central nervous system rather than Schwann cells of the peripheral nervous system. The cells do not synthesize basal lamina containing laminin and fibrillary collagen and also do not produce myelin components known to be produced by Schwann cells. Enteric glial cells are derived from neural crest cells and are thought to belong to the same lineage as Schwann cells. Dulac and Le Douarin (1991) have reported that enteric glial cells can produce Schwann cell myelin protein once they are removed from the gut environment. It appears that the
