These cells are known also as Kulchitsky cells (alternative spelling: Kultschitzky cells). Enterochromaffin cells are the most abundant enteroendocrine of the gastrointestinal tract (Cristina et al, 1978; Sjolund et al, 1983). These cells make up approximately 0-2 % of all endocrine cells in the rat oxyntic gland and approximately 7 % in the human gland (Simonsson et al, 1988).
Enterochromaffin cells are different from ECL cells [enterochromaffin-like cells], which are neuroendocrine cells of the gastric epithelium.
