[epithelial reticular cell]
These cells are tightly packed cells of epithelial (endodermal) origin and are most likely the same as a cell type referred to as dictyocytes. The cells are the framework-forming cells of the thymus that constitute the bulk of stromal cells of the thymus. The cells form a network (a cytoreticulum) and are attached to each other by desmosomes (Savino and Santa-Rosa, 1982; van Ewijk, 1988; Ewijk et al, 1988; Bearman et al, 1978; Pereira and Clermont, 1971; Ito and Hoshino, 1966; Hoshino, 1963). They are devoid of reticular fibers. The cells also cover the blood vessels and form a perivascular connective tissue sheath around them (Kato, 1997).
