Foam cells (lipid-laden macrophages) develop from macrophages that have ingested oxidized low density lipoprotein by a variety of endocytic pathways (Itabe and Takano, 2000). These macrophages help or hinder cholesterol removal from vessel walls in atherosclerotic lesions (Kruth, 2001).
These cells have been described also as lipophages. They are being referred to also as xanthoma cells and have been called foamy macrophages or foamy histiocytes.
The term, also: foamy cells, is used also in a more general sense to denote other cell types that are lipid-laden. For example, IGF-1 induces mesangial cells
