Biomaterials can cause a chronic local inflammation called foreign body reaction, and Foreign body giant cells together with other morphological variants of macrophages are the dominant early responders to biomaterial implantation and remain at biomaterial-tissue interfaces for the lifetime of the device (for overview see: Sheikh et al, 2015). These multinucleated cells arise by fusion of monocytes or macrophages and are found in a variety of anatomical locations (see also: foreign body reaction; see also: giant cells).
