[Growth arrest-specific gene-5] gas-5 is one of the growth arrest-specific genes identified in quiescent, serum-starved NIH 3T3 mouse fibroblasts (see: gas genes) (Coccia et al, 1992).
The gas-5 gene is expressed ubiquitously in mouse tissues during development and adult life. gas-5 exists in two variants arising by alternative splicing (see also: gene expression). They are found in the cytoplasm of growth-arrested cells. In Friend leukemia cells and NIH 3T3 cells levels of gas-5 gene mRNA are high in density-arrested cells and almost undetectable in actively growing cells.
