[wings apart-like] This gene (gene symbol: WAPL; previously: WAPAL) is the human homolog of the Drosophila melanogaster gene wings apart-like (WAPL; gene: CG3707), which encodes a protein regulating heterochromatin structure. The cDNA encoding hWAPL has been identified independently as KIAA0261. For a possible isoform see: Friend of EBNA2.
Oikawa et al (2004) have reported that the human gene is expressed predominantly in uterine cervical cancer and functions as an oncogene. Weak expression is observed in all other normal and tumor tissues examined.
