These cells are found in the organ of Corti in the inner ear (the spiral organ), a complex structure containing a single row of inner hair cells and three rows of outer hair cells. Hair cells are mechanoreceptor cells. They are the primary auditory receptor cells and are being referred to also as auditory sensory cells, acoustic hair cells, auditory cells, or cells of Corti (Housley et al, 2006; Fettiplace and Hackney, 2006; Hawkins and Lovett, 2004; Eatock and Hurley, 2003).
