The terms inner root sheath cells and outer root sheath cells pertain to the root sheath of hair follicles, which consists of a group of concentric layers of epithelial cells. It is composed of an external and an internal cell layer. The external or outer root sheath is a single sheet of cuboid cells. The internal root sheath is composed of three layers, Henle's layer, Huxley's layer, and an internal cuticle that is continuous with the outermost layer of the hair fiber.
