This general term refers to endothelial cells in various locations that can give rise to definitive blood cells and hematopoietic stem cells (for overview see also: Swiers et al, 2013; Hirschi, 2012; Jaffredo et al, 2013; see also the entries angioblasts and hemangioblasts). During mouse development, the first definitive hematopoietic stem cells are detected in the aorta-gonad-mesonephros region (Müller et al, 1994; Medvinsky and Dzierzak, 1996; de Bruijn et al, 2002; Cumano et al, 1996; Zovein et al, 2008; Jaffredo et al, 2000).
