The acute phase protein hemopexin consists of two similar halves. The domain structure is derived from four short tandem repeats (Takahashi et al, 1985). Similar sequences found in a variety of other proteins are being referred to as hemopexin domains, hemopexin-like domains, hemopexin-type repeats, or PEX domains. Hunt et al (1987) have reported the presence of a single hemopexin domain in some, but not all, metalloproteinases and two copies of it in vitronectin and have suggested a function of this domain in protein-protein interactions and substrate recognition.
