[hypogonadal] hpg is an infertile mouse mutant (Cattanach et al, 1977; Mason et al, 1986) due to a congenital deletion of the gene encoding GNRH [gonadotropin releasing hormone]. The absence of GNRH in this naturally occurring knock-out mouse results in a markedly reduced pituitary content of LH [luteinizing hormone], FSH [follicle-stimulating hormone], and undetectable or barely measurable serum gonadotrophin levels (Cattanach et al, 1977; Charlton et al, 1983).
