[heat shock protein 72] Hsp72 is one of at least 11 genes encoding highly related proteins that make up the human Hsp70 family of heat shock proteins (for overview see: Tavaria et al, 1996; Mayer and Bukau, 2005). The protein is also being referred of as HSP70i [heat shock protein 70 inducible; heat shock 70 kDa protein inducible] as its expression is inducible, in contrast to other family members, the expression of which is constitutive.
Characterisation of the first gene for hsp72 (Wu et al (1985) shows that hsp72 is transcribed from two genes that are 11 kb apart (Hunt and Morimoto, 1985; Milner and Campbell, 1990). These genes have been termed HSPA1A [heat shock 70kDa protein 1A
