[hybrid hepatocyte]
abbr. HybHPs. The term hybrid hepatocytes has been used to refer to a distinct population of hepatocytes that exist at the periportal region of the uninjured mouse liver. These cells express several bile-duct-enriched genes, including low amounts of SOX9. Unlike oval cells that only contribute marginally to producing new hepatocytes during liver regeneration, this cell type shows high regenerative capacity and is highly efficient in repair of livers deficient in healthy hepatocytes without giving rise to hepatocellular carcinoma in three independent models (Font-Burgada J et al, 2015; de Prisco et al, 2019).
