[intracellular chemokine] this term refers to a strategy essentially producing a knock-out phenotype for a (cytokine) receptor by blocking the cell surface expression of newly synthesized receptor proteins (Yang et al, 1998). Engel et al (2000) have observed that an intrakine (an engineered form of SDF-1-alpha) may also be secreted and cause the downregulation of the corresponding receptor by acting like a secreted chemokine.
