abbr. also: Kpsn. Kaposin is encoded by an open reading frame (K12) in the genome of KSHV [Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus], which is identical with HHV-8 [human herpesvirus type 8]. The protein is being referred to also as KSHV orfK12 [KSHV K12 protein] or HHV-8 orfK12 [HHV-8 K12 protein]. Kaposin is expressed in latently infected cells and in Kaposi sarcoma cells, which harbor latent KSHV (Pearce et al, 2005) and promotes cell growth and cytokine production.
