[karyochrome cell]
This term has been used by classical cytologists and essentially refers to the morphology and histological staining behaviour of neurons. The term was suggested by Nissl (1895), who used a specific aniline-based basic stain for revealing neurons and glial cells in brain sections.
Karyochrome cells have an unstained cell body usually free of chromatin. A small bit of stainable substance may be found on one side of the nucleus. The nuclei of these cells are larger than those of neuroglial cells. See also: somatochrome cells.
