[ken and barbie] This Drosophila melanogaster protein is encoded by gene CG5575. It is the fly ortholog of the BCL6 oncogene. The ken gene was identified originally in a screen for mutants causing male sterility. Ken mutants lack external genitalia (Castrillon et al, 1993). Ken shares a domain structure with other known transcriptional repressors such as the presence of a BTB/POZ domain and a C-terminal zinc finger domain (Lukacsovich et al, 2003) and has been shown to act as a selective inhibitor of a subset of JAK-STAT targets (Arbouzova et al, 2006).
