[KH domain encompassing protein 1] This Drosophila melanogaster gene (CG3584) encodes an RNA binding protein related to the murine Quaking apoptotic inducer. The protein contains a KH domain. kep1 can induce cell death by apoptosis when transfected into different cell lines. Knock-out flies lacking expression of kep1 are viable, but females display reduced fertility. Loss of kep1 also suppresses apoptosis in the Drosophila melanogaster eye. These animals also display an increased susceptibility to Escherichia coli infection (Di Fruscio et al, 1998).
