These are mainly epithelial cells that show diffuse vacuolization, in particular the formation of a large demarcated clear zone around the nucleus. This perinuclear zone is surrounded by a dense peripheral cytoplasmic rim (Casas-Cordero et al, 1981). These cells may be referred to as balloon cells, which are also vacuolated cells. In addition, koilocytes appear multinucleated. Cho et al (2005) have reported that such cells have multilobated nuclei and that this is related to aberrations of cell cycle control.
